City Winery

kl133120 on May 11th 2013

Some days a glass of wine and a good show are about all you want out of life. Fortunately, City Winery provides both. This sexy space makes a great music venue (the Roots were doing a warm-up when I went!), and offers a killer, Napa Valley-style wine list and food menu to seal the deal. They even offer tastings and classes if you’re looking to get your knowledge/drink on at the same time. Take a seat at the bar and strike up a conversation; most patrons are amicable. But a heads up: avoid the nights where there isn’t some form of event. The space is big enough to feel awkward without a mutual distraction.

Bottom Line:

  • Size: cavernous
  • Atmosphere: jovial
  • Outdoor space: nope
  • Seating: yes
  • Food: yes
  • Live music: most days of the week, see website for schedule
  • Crowd: friendly, wine-and-music loving bunch
  • Staff: pleasant and knowledgeable

Union Pool

kl133120 on Apr 8th 2013

Figured I’d start out this blog with a dark horse in the race for solo scene supremacy (which is not a title anyone’s excited about… yet). But it’s likely you’ve heard of Union Pool, probably in the “hey bro, let’s go to union pool and find some respectable young women to have intelligent conversations with.” Or whatever bros talk about. And why would I ever want to go to such a sloppy, sleazy establishment by myself, you ask? Precisely because its the one bar in Brooklyn everyone has heard of. Which means you get a strange and fantastic mix of tourists, new to Brooklynites, and of course the utterly inebriated. Basically a whole mess of people who have no idea why they’re there. But! That’s exactly why its charming: everyone’s confused, everyone’s drunk, and everyone’s desperately seeking a good time. You’ll have no problem striking up a conversation with a stranger or 7, particularly with the (largely foreign) nicotine addicts outside, and you should have no qualms walking away if the topics of conversation are not to your liking. No hard feelings because the chance is slim to none you’ll bump into them again. I warn you that Union Pool is not for the feint of heart, and maybe not the best choice for those new to solo adventuring. Feel free to go with some friends and branch off when you get bored of each other (which is exactly what I did). The bar won’t mind.

Bottom Line:

  • Size: BIG (think multiple bars, a backroom dance floor, open patio)
  • Atmosphere: charmingly chaotic
  • Outdoor space: yes
  • Seating: nope
  • Food: yes (tacos!)
  • Live music: most days of the week, Dj party Saturday, see website for schedule
  • Crowd: friendly foreigners, recent New York transplants, lots of good, happy people
  • Staff: too loud to judge, so let’s go with nice enough
