The Return of Derrick Rose

Derrick Rose’s first game since April 2012  (Michael Conroy/ Associated Press)

Derrick Rose is back! Derrick Rose has returned after a 526 day break following tearing his anterior cruciate ligament in the first round of the 2012 playoffs. This injury kept him off the court, but once he returned during the preseason game against the Indiana Pacers he received a warm reception from the fans. Rose prepared for his return with extensive physical therapy following his surgery May of 2012.

During the Preseason game Derrick Rose occasionally showed a bit of rust, but performed well overall for his first game back. Rose contributed to the Chicago Bulls 82-76 win against the Indiana Pacers with a layup and later a dunk in the third quarter. Derrick Rose will be able to adjust back to his former status if he can play without inflicting damage to his repaired ACL. Following the game, Rose commented on his performance, stating “Turnovers were big tonight because I was going too fast”.

Geno Smith, The Real Deal?

It’s officially “Geno Time” in the Big Apple these days. After a nail biting 30-28 victory over the Falcons this past monday night, Geno Smith and the New York Jets have gotten off to a 3 and 2 start surprising most of the sports world. Many people including ESPN claimed that the Jets were actually the bottom feeders of the NFL, ranking them number 32 out of 32 teams before the season began.

The success of the Jets so far this season can be attributed to the stellar play of the teams defensive unit, and also from the rookie quarterback Geno Smith. Against the Falcons subpar defense lead by former Giant Osi Umenyiora, Smith had 16 completions out of 20 passing attempts for 199 yards and 3 touchdowns. He also lead the Jets downfield on the final drive of the game that set up Nick Folk for the game winning 43 yard field goal.

If Geno and the Jets continue to come out with performances like this one, the boy’s in green will soon definitely prove their many doubters wrong.

Eli Manning throws another interception. Pass was intended for (80) Cruz.

Eli Manning was considered an elite quarterback by many people in the NFL after the two Super Bowl wins; however his performance from the past weeks, disappoints many. Eli Manning is known for his comeback wins during the 4th quarter in multiple games, include the two Super Bowl XLII and XLVI. Author Bill Pennington in “Powerhouse to Punch Line, N.F.C. East Is in Free Fall,” states that it is stunning how bad the Giants have been, and the New York Giants fans can totally agree. The Giants are being compared to the 1954 Chicago Cardinals, a team that won a total of 33 games in the 1950s. From the looks of it the Giants will continue to play just as bad as they have been the first five games, letting the opponents score 31 points or more.

Colts Feeling Lucky

Andrew Luck has been more than giving the Colts a lot of luck since they drafted him last year. Luck has helped Indianapolis go from a 2-14 season to an 11-5 turnaround. His statistics having only been improving.  He has become one of the most underrated players in the league. Author Chase Stuart in “Luck’s Effect on Colts Transcends His Statistics,” points out that Luck has a league leading third down QBR of 97.6 as well as the most value production running for any quarterback. Thanks to Luck the Colts are now serious contenders for the Super Bowl. It looks like the Colts made the right choice drafting Andrew because they definitely needed a whole lot of luck.
