Knowledge is Greatness

Knowledge is found everywhere, anything that is new to you is technically knowledge. the more knowledge you accumulate the more the world opens its doors to you. knowledge is also forever, you cannot “un know” something and it cannot be take away from you therefore becoming the most incredible tool you can ever have.

The articles our group chose were all associated with the gathering of knowledge or the obstacles that come with the intent to further your knowledge. in the GED article we show how the value of knowledge is so important there are certain standards to be met to move forward in institutions of higher education. We also explained how the key to the door of knowledge is the library and we are fortunate to have access to the Baruch Newman Library that allows to achieve greatness. And we also explain how there is an unfortunate price on education and the price continues to rise because of how its valued everywhere.

Newman Library: Our experiences

As freshmen, we spend so much time in the library, that school becomes our life. For many of us the Library was an enlightening experience. The Library is one of our main hubs for doing research and homework and studying when we haven’t done it at home.

Turning Education Upside Down

Article

The New York Times article: “Turning Education Upside Down,” by Tina Rosenberg is about a particular High School in Detroit becoming what the article refers to as a “flipped school”: a school that switched it’s main media for teaching lectures from in-person to online. Clintondale High School, the first school to do this, first began doing this with only a specific few classes, but after seeing the immense success with those classes, they ended up switching all of their classes online. A few of the results were particularly dramatic: “failure rate in English dropped from 52 percent to 19 percent; in math, it dropped from 44 percent to 13 percent; in science, from 41 percent to 19 percent; and in social studies, from 28 percent to 9 percent,” says Rosenberg. Now, more and more schools from all over the country have begun administering the exact same form of education. Perhaps, with school lectures beginning to go online, we may eventually see more students in virtual classrooms than real ones. This might seem like a dramatic change from the classrooms that we’re all used to; but, hey, results don’t lie and you know what they say: knowledge is power.

Information that May be too Public

In the article “Group Presses for Safeguards on the Personal Data of Schoolchildren” author Natash Singer talks about the group Common Sense Media, pressing for protection over the personal data of students. Many parents, and students themselves, are unaware of the fact that data stored by schools may become public or, through faulty systems, be open to use by commercial corporations. Children’s health, records, and financial status may be open to viewing, and may a source of discrimination against said students.

Tutoring Company in Texas Draws Fire as State Pulls Back Services

This article is about the tutoring services, No Child Left behind, being shut down in Texas and Tutors With Computers taking over many school districts across the country. Public school districts have been complaining of the academic effectiveness of getting help over the phone or computer. Just because it is 2013, doesn’t mean we should give up on the more effective 1 on 1 learning.

What’s Inside of You

The article, “The Immune System From the Inside” by Nicholas Wade discusses the book “The Compatibility Gene” and how it will inform readers on the immune system. The books will help to educate readers who have little knowledge on the way our immune system works to keep us healthy. It also offers up interesting facts about immunologists, like quirks, and glimpses into what their personal lives were like.

Generally, beyond school education, there are many people who are not interested in the way their body works until they or a relative gets severely sick. “The Compatibility Gene” can be useful here, as it presents a way for us to learn more about how we function. And besides just sickness, there seems to be proof that genes may not just affect your facial features, but affect the way you think and perceive things.

Finance Education Aid for Students All Ages

The article “Finance Class on the Web, for Students All Ages,” by Tara Siegel Bernard discusses free Finance classes, being offered up by Joshua Rauh, a finance professor at the Stanford Graduate School of Business. Rauh’s classes primarily deal with retirement planning, which is would be generally aimed towards an older audience. However, the classes are beneficial to students of all ages as many students going into and come out of college do not have apt knowledge on how to prepare financially for the future, however far away.
