The passage on Act 3, scene 3, lines 333-343, represents the introduction of how the handkerchief comes into essence for the play, to be used for Lago’s plot against Othello. Emilia, Lago’s wife, began the speech by pointing out that the handkerchief was actually Othello’s first gift to his wife, Desdemona. This first gift represented the couple’s purest feelings for each other, so it is of high importance to Othello. Emilia went on to express how Lago had numerous times in the past attempted to convince her to steal the handkerchief from Othello and Desdemona. This is essential information because it shown how important the object was to Lago’s plot against Othello, it was needed to start the series of tragic events that were to shortly follow. However this does not come up in Emilia’s head, she did not notice anything suspicious with Lago’s odd request for the Handkerchief. Therefore she did not hesitant to give it to Lago once she had found it. Without a reason for suspicious towards her husband, Emilia also remained silent even when Desdemona began to suffer with its absence. Emilia states “and give’t lago. What he will do with it, Heaven knows, not I. I nothing, but to please his fantasy. (act 3, sc 3, 341-343) This shows that Emilia did not question Lago’s intentions, she just wanted to please him in any way she could.
