In both A Lesson Before Dying and Monster, racism is a topic that is fought over time and time again. Due to ignorance, many people may believe that segregation has ended years ago after the Civil War, but fail to recognize that this social war is still ongoing. Even in today’s society, whites have certain negative views about blacks and vice versa. In both pieces of literature, the protagonists become dehumanized in the eyes of others, simply because they are African American. Regardless of location, whether it is in south in Louisiana or up north in New York, people become blinded by color and therefore judge while impaired.
