I think your case for paid parental leave is one that is gaining more and more traction in the United States and is a serious topic for discussion. As more and more Americans realize that the rest of the world is allowing families to enjoy the birth of their children and spend time with them during their formative years, the thoughts on paid parental leave are changing. I think you do a great job in the problem portion addressing all of the reasons needed for the change and why we would benefit as a whole by adopting what could be relatively low cost and proven methods of success.
One thing that I would suggest changing would be to explain what the leave options are for the Netflix employees that work in the more technical aspects of the company. It would be interesting to compare the two leave packages and to see just how differently the company values the two types of employees. This would also be interesting because as presumably more skilled employees their salaries, benefits, etc. would be more significant hits to the companies bottom line, but they seem more willing to absorb that in order to keep them happy.
I had never heard of the FAMILY Act before, so it was interesting to read about that and the potential that it has. Hopefully there can be more attention drawn to an important and changing aspect of American family life.
Thanks for the feedback – will definitely change that. I forgot that I had only broadly mentioned the progressive changes that companies have been making rather than get specific. You’re right – it will definitely put a different perspective on the differences.
