  1. Hi, This is a great topic, and bullying is a serious problem that many nurses encounter in the workplace. You did a great job stating the seriousness of the problem and provided supporting evidence on how it affects the nurses. I think you could make the argument stronger by adding evidence on how it ultimately affects patient care, such as increase medication errors, or add a dollar value to how much turn over of nurses or sick calls due to the effects of bullying has on employees. You mentioned solution options such as ADR, zero tolerance culture, more education program but I think you could add more details to these options to make a stronger cases. Like for instance would there be a verbal or written warning for those who participate in bullying acts? What corrective actions should occur? Another option would be to create a bullying task force, where you can have nurses go through a bullying course and serve as unit anti-bullying representatives that can assist the unit with increasing awareness, provide support, and assist with escalating issues relating to bullying.

  2. Wow this was very interesting to me. I had no idea this as an issue in the nursing industry. The problem is conveyed with seriousness and gets me (the reader) thinking about other parts of the medical industry. I agree with Quyen that you might want to dig a little deeper into you policy options by making it clear how bullying can effect the job and patients and how the options you suggests would contribute to a better work environment.

  3. This is an interesting policy as it can easily be translated to other industries. It is very true that incivility and bullying leads to work-conflict, poor working environment, poor performance and reduced profit. This is a serious problem for many organizations. Many organizations have policies in place to maintain civility and professional practice in the workplace but there is a disparity as it continues to be a widespread problem. The options you presented are great and it addresses the lack of communication and relationship between management and employees. In hospitals, employees are fighting over resources. In high stress environment such as ER and critical care areas, employees are faced with stressors because of acuity. What are the options to reduce the instability in the workplace as a result of lack of resources or high stressor environment? Management are always asking employees to do more with less. What are the things management can change to improve the high stress environment?

  4. Bullying in the workplace have been a major issue in large organizations. I personally have not experienced this in my work environment, but I have known someone who had this experience. She was the only female working around a male dominated field. She is into construction and she is a lower level supervisor, she receives backlashes and negative feedback from her workers. She told me this story of a worker who have been in the company for over 10 years and as she tried to correct him in the electrical work he had completed, he became very defensive and at the end of the day she was the one who had to complete the task. Bullying is especially a big issue in work places that is normally dominated by the men.
