Week #9

This weeks reading highlight the intense political US involvement in the Israeli Palestine relationship. At this time, the atrocities are occurring in the Gaza strip, should be labeled as genocide. Many civilians are wrongfully being attacked. As Palestinians cry out for help, most of the world seems to just watch. When will citizens at the Gaza strip receive help rather than bombings?

Elgindy and Friedman describe US involvement regarding Israeli-Palestine relationships and how ineffective it has been through out the years. US involvement has been very unstable throughout the years. However, it became more unstable about a decade ago due to US involvement with other Middle Eastern states. As the US attempted to withdraw its support from the middle east, it has raised tension on Israeli and Palestine sovereignty. As territory occupancy continues to be an issue, US continues to question its support. Friedman raised an important point; although America has become the entrusted mediator in building trust in the middle east, mother nature might be fast forwarding the process a lot faster that anticipated. Countries throughout the middle east have experienced vast droughts. There seems to be a Green Blue Deal to push forward a peace in the middle east initiative, where middle eastern states, Israel and Palestine included, would be forced to enter in better diplomatic relationships since they would now have to become interdependent… All thanks to Mother Earth.

But, as we wait until atrocities continue to occur in Gaza, US continues to not chose any involvement. So whats next? Do we wait until mother nature makes us realize to stop the bombings? Or do we, The US, finally chose to enforce peace?

Karine,

An interesting and forcefully stated opinion in your blog post, which is great! Unfortunately, the US has not been in a position to “enforce” a peace either in the Middle East or elsewhere, especially when the parties do not wish to have them do so. As we will discuss in class, we have “seen this movie” over and over again in the past thirty years. Both Hamas and Hezbollah deny Israel’s right to exist and have attacked repeatedly, which causes is Israel to respond. Israel is not without blame either, of course. But the cycle just keeps repeating itself. –Professor Wallerstein
