Marco Perez Jr. The Khalistani Movement Post

This week’s post will be about growing concerns of the Khalistani movement in India and the West. The Khalistani movement refers to the separatist movement seeking a homeland/sovereign ethnic religious nation-state for the Sikh majority in Punjab. This movement has existed for some time in the 1980s Punjab experienced a civil insurance of a violent wave of terror attacks in the Indian States. Such attacks consisted of killing policemen, legislators, and military personnel and eventually spilling over into innocent civilians. According to the article “Khalistani Terrorists Now Threaten Both India and the West” by KJ Singh the Khalistan movement has become a growing concern in the countries of India, the UK, Canada, and Germany due to members of the movement acting as touristy by insight violence in Punjab an in their diaspora counties to achieve their separatist agenda. The article highlights incidents over the years that express the terror attacks linked to the movement that is growing beyond  India. Such as the blowing up of the Air India flight in 1985 from Toronto to London killing 329 people, or the attack of the British Prime Minister Ujjal Dosanjh for not kowtowing to the Khalistani terrorist. In addition, the article underscores that the West did not grant the movement proper concern in the past and has now been forced to be taken seriously due to the violent spillovers happening in the West. I bring the article up to pose the question should Western Powers respond to the movement in Punjab or should they only address issues within their borders related to the movement?

Marco,

I’m a bit confused by this blog post, because it focuses on India, which is the topic for the NEXT class. This week’s topic is North Korea. The Sikhs have been seeking independence for many decades. In fact, just recently there has been a big blow-up between India and Canada over an apparent assassination of a Sikh on Canadian territory. –Professor Wallerstein
