This week’s blog post will be about an incident in international waters in relation to the Israel and Hamas Conflict. According to the article “Incident involving US warship intercepting missiles near Yemen lasted 9 Hours” by Oren Lieberman, the United States military forces intercepted a series of missiles and drones in the middle of the Gaza and Israeli conflict, on October 23, 2023. The USS Carney intercepted a barrage of ordinances such as 4 cruise missiles and 15 drones in the course of 9 hours while heading south in the Red Sea. Countermeasures for these commercial air flight ordinances consisted of strategic precision through the utilization of SM-2 surface-to-air missiles launched from the USS Carney. Intelligence has pointed out that the weapons originated from Iranian-backed Houthi. After the mitigated incident many officials are concerned that potential expanded external involvement in the Isralie-Gazam may cause the prolonging of the conflict and violence in the region. I would like to inquire to the class based on this article would your perspective change on US involvement in the conflict? If so, why?

Marco,
One would have to assume that the Houthis launched these weapons on “orders” from Tehran. Like Hamas and Hezbollah, they are clients of Iran, and they would not be able to sustain their war effort without them. Still, it was a bold and almost irrational move to attack a US warship. It provides further evidence, if any was needed, that the lines of conflict are hardening and becoming more distinct in the Middle East–and they clearly do involve non-state actors. –Professor Wallerstein
