Category Archives: Studio Exercise 1: Building Blocks

The item that I printed out was arch-like block. Basically its a block that’s had a circle chunked out of it. We were required to customize it and change it to our liking to represent a type of art we preferred.
What I had planned on doing was to create a sort of optical illusion where if you were to look through the arch from the front, it would seem like it was a long road, but instead it was just progressively smaller versions of the arch. The challenge was to think of something creative for this assignment. When one thinks of blocks, they think of building something. I wanted to digress from this thought process and to go out of the box. This way of thinking is what I also recommend people to do as they set out on this project

Meanwhile, In the Real World….

In this assignment, us students had to get our butts off the computer and venture to the “outside”. Jokes aside, Maker Fair was AMAZING!!!! If i were to rate it out of 10, it would be a 50. I had loads of fun. First, they grab your attention with a GIANT FLAMING ROBOT. Every little boy’s dream come true. Then they invite you to be inspired to see other dreams come true. My favorite invention was Google’s Hugbot. Not only was it adorable; as someone that loves to give hugs, this is something I would call ingenious. Another thing that I loved was the prosthetic arm that responds to muscle movements, perfect for amputees. It was encouraging to see that not only ideas for entertainment are being created, but inventions that address real life problems are also born into fruition.

Not only new creations were showcased at Maker Fair. Old ideas such as Google Glass, or current ideas such as Google Cardboard were also shown at the convention. As a huge fan of Google and their creations, I was ecstatic to see these items shown to the public. I even got to try out Google Cardboard!

How does this relate to the course of 3D design? It helped inspire me to strive to be more innovative and to think out of the box. Creativity, ingenuity, a bit of realism, and a bit of mad scientist, is what I’ve learned to strive to be from this fair.20150927_14180020150927_14083520150927_14581120150927_141152

Studio Exercise 2: Five Forms x Five Materials

In this assignment, we were to take five forms and imagine it to be 3D printed in five materials.  The forms were a cookie cutter, a knob, a vase, a ring, and a phrase (words).  The required materials  were hard plastic, flexible plastic, metal, stone, and any edible material. Here is the Spec sheet that I had made to describe how each material would be made, and the costs it would take to make it. The reason why vase is in ?? is because the original design had errors (walls too thin?) therefore was not able to calculate its worth.
