In January 2017 The Bronx’s only major bookstore, Barnes & Noble, shut, leaving nearly 1.4 million people in the Bronx without a major bookstore in the borough. One Bronx resident, Noëlle Santos, is striving to open an independent bookstore, called The Lit Bar. A Bronx native, Santos wants The Lit Bar – both a wine bar and a community center – to feature local authors.
