The music industry proves once again how corrupt and greedy it has become, human decency be damned.

Pop star Kesha recently attempted to void her six album recording contract with Sony because her producer “Dr.Luke”, Luke Gottwald, allegedly abused her — mentally, physically and sexually, according to TMZ — multiple times over the last ten years.

The case was brought to the Supreme Court in Manhattan last week, where the public learned, among other things, that the 28-year-old Tennessee native was sexually assaulted for the first time by Gottwald on her 18th birthday. You can read the complaint in its entiretyhere.

After hear both side’s arguments, Justice Shirley Kornreich ruled in favor of Sony and Dr. Luke. “It was commercially responsible decision,” Kornreich said.

Translation: Sony’s money making potential with Kesha under contract outweighs her overall well being, considering she would have to continually work with her alleged assailant. Consider my mind blown. And what makes this situation even more pathetic is that Judge Kornreich claimed that Sony would suffer immensely if Kesha were not to follow through with her record contract. After the decision was announced, Kesha, overwhelmed with emotions, began crying inside the court house.

Add to this, Sony is defending Dr. Luke, a stance that can only damage their image in the long run. Instead of Sony investigating Kesha’s claims to serial sexual abuse, they gave her the option to work with a different producer in an attempt to sweep the case under the rug.

Thousands of fans were shocked and upset by the judge’s ruling, as they rallied outside the courthouse and protested online with the FreeKesha hashtag and by starting a petition for a boycott of Sony. Celebrities also voiced their support for Kesha via social media, including fellow musicians Lady Gaga, Kelly Clarkson and Taylor Swift.
