Frederick Douglass described the dehumanizing acts by the slave owners in many ways. First off, Slaves were not considered as people, they were considered as property. This disgusting view practically gave these slaves no kind of respect, fairness, or any kind of good treatment. They had no privacy, perhaps a couple minutes throughout the day when their “owners” did not ask for anything at that moment. These Slave owners specifically did not buy families together, so that the spirit of the slaves spirit would be broken, and he would practically depend on the slave owner. “More to the point of Douglass’s case, because slaves were considered property they were denied the rights associated with property ownership, including the right to privacy derived from property-in-self.” (Douglass chapter 4.) Douglass never had a family, and neither did a majority of the slaves. To think something like this was allowed in our history is absolutely mind boggling.

I think that a lot of people in this word get dehumanized for many different reasons. It happens to more individuals than it should. From your sexual preference, your Identity, your race, your way of life, your religion, dehumanizing others is unfortunately like a sick culture to some. From Bad stereotypes, I see constantly, that Jewish people being made fun of, Asians being mocked on for the same reasons, and now being blamed for the virus? There was a video posted on social media of an Individual spraying a can of Lysol on a passenger on the train who was Asian.  He mentioned that he did not want to get sick from the virus, therefore he sprayed him with the can. People who act like this are the problem with the world, not the ones who they dehumanize. This virus is not a free ticket pass to act like an Animal, and justify your idiotic actions. Bullying in schools is seen often, kids being dehumanized for weight, looks, it’s just a bad practice that should not continue. Dehumanizing individuals has been around for far too long. The Holocaust, Racism, Genocide due to race, History has unfortunately repeated itself far too many times. This only gets solved with a simple solution, which is treating everyone that same way you would like to be treated. Love everyone equally, less hate is the only way we will prosper in life. This Coronavirus really shows how discriminating people still are, and it’s extremely sad to see.

  1. I totally agree with how it has affected Frederick Douglass’ life. And it is very unfortunate for these Asians who’ve gotten discriminated because of their physical appearances.

  2. I also think history is repeating itself, and that should not be the case. We should learn from history, but people are too racist and xenophobic to realize this. They aren’t educated enough to see the real underlying problems.

  3. I agree that it is often seen that society in history tends towards outcasting a certain group of people. Hopefully this can be better managed in the future.
