In the book, Obama’s family is forced to witness to conflicting and diverging sides of America. Through their many unique experiences and contentious struggles, the Obama family is able to break the chains of conformity and set the foundation for what was bound to be a budding progressive ideology. Originally the grandparents of Obama came from a very traditionalist and patriotic past where they both joined the war effort with the thoughts of their nation at the forefront of their minds. Patriotism became an integral way of life for Obama’s grandfather as he was even teetering on the edge of vulnerable as his patriotism could’ve easily led him astray to such temptations as McCarthyism. Regardless, Obama’s grandfather developed into a man of class, this would be challenged though with their experiences in Texas. Through these troubling experiences, Obama’s grandparents would learn of the ever-looming racial divide that they frowned upon due to its severity. Obama’s grandparents would be found treating black individuals with basic human decency which was frowned upon by the Texas community. When in Hawaii, Obama’s grandparents would later find out that their daughter was dating a black man. Although Obama’s grandparents didn’t promote racism, the idea of interracial marriage was still very foreign to them as they weren’t particularly sure how to approach the situation. Upon looking past the notion of color, they would learn of the great man that would later turn out to be Obama’s father. With this final resignation, the Obama family had truly embraced the idea of equality despite this not being a mainstream ideology in America. Oftentimes they would come to the defense of Obama as a child when tourists would look down upon him. Obama served as almost a final resignation to the entirety of the Obama family that they not only rejected the flawed idea of racism but also welcomed a new wave of progressivism that supported matters such as interracial marriage. The two visions were essential to sum it up a Patriotic citizen of whom embraced the normal ideologies of America (racism) and the other vision was just like not being racist. Essentially Obama divided these two worlds by making his family essentially take a formal stance against racism as before that they never embraced either side and somewhat mingled in both areas.
