This Artwork name is called American People Series #20: Die by Faith Ringgold born in 1930. Looking at this artwork this name influenced my understanding of the artwork being that I thought it was more of segregation and the rise of the blacks fighting back for their rights. The artist as stated is Faith Ringgold. Looking at her history she was an African American painter that was born in the 1930’s and wanted to experience the significant social and political change in the United States. As there is no text in this image there is a clear understanding on what kind of timeline the painting is dressing and the actions that took place. The color plays a significant role in shaping the viewer’s experience and evoking their emotions; as the colors are bold and intense it brings a sense of anger and conflict. For example, the use of red in the painting indicates the anger and violence the people had back then. To me when I look at the painting the framing and composition goes well together to create a narrative that emphasizes the emotional intensity of the social and political issues that are being addressed in the painting. Personally I believe that all the rhetorical situations apply to this piece being that the museum sets an atmosphere for each piece of artwork so that the audiences can sort of have a feel and connection towards the piece. For example, for the audience perspective, it will attract audiences that are really interested in political and social issues. The purpose was to make those issues shine so people can’t really understand what people went through during the dark ages.
This artwork that I choose is called Our Flag by Ruscha. The name of this piece influenced my experience because it evoked my patriotism towards the US. The artist that painted this painting is Edward Ruscha. To me I believe that the purpose of this painting was to inform us the feelings it had about the current state of the US. I completely agree with him as I believe our government is so corrupt and that the negatives outweigh the positives that the president/governments offers. As we can see there isn’t any text in this image but we have a clear understanding that the flag is deteriorating which can represent that the US is in trouble whether its the economy, politically, or socially. The colors of the flag express a strong emotional feeling of patriotism as the bold and vibrant colors of red, white, and blue represents a sense of loyalty and love for our nation. The composition and framing goes align with each other as the flag deteriorating it represents a conflict causing the US to break down. The rhetorical situation of audience, purpose and context can all be applied to this context. The reason for this being that the audience will have a sense of realism and different levels of emotional feelings when looking at this painting. As for purpose it was to show the imperfection and the complexities of the US as there are always things needed to be changed. Finally the context portion is to demonstrate the challenges the US back in the day.
