Assignment #2 Draft

In today’s world, college has been a phase where students are reaching new heights and becoming more mature. It’s a phase where young adults are learning to become self-reliant, personal growth, a sense of responsibility, and maturity, and also get to know what they want to do in their future career path. As they interact with academic challenges, social life challenges, and the pressure of assurance that they will have a future career path; have them develop a valuable skill that needs perseverance. When diving deeper into the exploration of self-perseverance, I came across two articles “Perseverance Is an Important Quality as You Will Face Challenges in Life,& It’s a Skill That Will Pay Off”  by Sudhir Gupta and “Grit: The “Special Sauce” of Success” which both articles convey the importance of self – perseverance, but they also have different to approaches to their rhetorical strategies in their arguments.

In terms of strategies, “Grit: The “Special Sauce” of Success” explores the importance of grit, as the title references, in addition to perseverance; on the other hand the article “Perseverance Is an Important Quality as You Will Face Challenges in Life,& It’s a Skill That will pay off” focuses solely importance self-perseverance. In the grit article, the author references William James’ idea of individuals not using their strengths at their fullest potential. James wants to emphasize the importance of how people tend to live their lives below their full potential. Only through perseverance and hard work can you realize your limits. On the other hand, Gupta presents perseverance as a way of overcoming challenges that are illustrated in real life. He emphasizes the importance of how perseverance is needed to overcome challenges.

One other contrast is that the structure is different. While the grit article accentuates the methodology to build and develop perseverance, Gupta’s article focuses on perseverance being built through overcoming life challenges. It is important to have passion and things you are passionate about but it is more important to have perseverance. It is perseverance that will let you work hard over a long period and ultimately build your success. The first step is to understand what grit is about. From that point on the grit article continues to talk about what are the different aspects of developing grit and perseverance. In “Perseverance Is an Important Quality as You Will Face Challenges in Life,& It’s a Skill That Will Pay off” article, Gupta provides us with an example of how a difficult course will also provide a similar level of reward: for each hour of perseverance there is proportional stamina that you gain. Just as the old saying goes “You get what you sow”.

Both articles highlight the importance of perseverance for achieving success. For example in the Grits’ article; the Ted Talk that was provided by Angela Duckworth was convinced that every student could learn the material if they worked hard and long enough. She concluded that one characteristic that predicted success was grit. Passion and perseverance allows us to find what we want in our life and the purpose to do things. In Gupta’s piece, he stresses the fact that self-doubt is normal and that it shouldn’t be a reason to stop you from reaching your goal. He provides an example of how Michael Jordan’s failure allowed him to use it as a strength to persevere through challenges and start winning. The use of emotional appeals allows the audience to further relate to both articles as we were taught at a young age to work hard to get good results.

Grits focuses on an academic approach explaining the concept of grit and how it plays a huge role in self-perseverance. Grits piece has taken a practical and experimental approach using personal narratives to illustrate how perseverance plays a high role in today’s world. Duckworth’s research played a significance as her research showed that grit was a predictor of defining success. Gupta followed more of a motivational approach as he is to inspire and motivate young adults to not self-doubt themselves and overcome the challenges ahead of them and that the skill should be valued/ developed throughout their career.

In conclusion, “Perseverance Is an Important Quality as You Will Face Challenges in Life,& It’s a Skill That Will Pay Off” and “Grit: The “Special Sauce” of Success” demonstrate the importance of self-perseverance during their path of adulthood. One relies more on the problems that are being interacted with when going through adulthood, while the other focuses more on how to solve the challenges when preserving through it. Despite their differences, both articles reinforce the importance of self-perseverance and makes it a really interesting case as there are as many different perseverance cases to explore such as relationships and hardships.

  1. Hi Steven ,

    Thank you for sharing.

    My main feedback for revision:
    – Grammar and wording, especially in the introduction. Run on/ not very comprehensive sentences.
    – I’m having trouble finding your thesis/ rhetorical situation. We know you are writing about perseverance, but what aspect of adulthood relies on perseverance?

    A few minor points:
    – Bolded titles.
    – Authors name missing for “Grit…”
    – Are the points made about perseverance throughout this piece from your own perspective, or from the authors?

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or queries relating to the above.

    Regards,

  2. Hi Steven,

    Thank you sharing.

    My main feedback for revision:
There is a lot of repetition and worldly sentences in the first paragraph that make it hard to understand what you are trying to say. I think it would be helpful to include what the rhetorical strategies are that the authors use. Your thesis also is a bit unclear an incomplete since it doesn’t state how the articles are different.

I think it is unneeded to bold the article names, it does not look professional and is to in MLA format. I think your analysis is also a little hard to understand and it would be more effective if you stated the actual rhetorical strategies.

    A few minor points:
There is a little bit of reptation that can be cleared out by combining different sentences which can help the flow of the writing.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or queries relating to the above.

  3. -Your intro is good and defines key terms. Talk about the authors and who they are. For your thesis don’t forget to make it a x,y,z format. Mention 3 rhetorical strategies they use in their arguments.
-In your first body paragraph talk about how they emphasize perseverance with rhetoric rather than only talking about the arguments of the authors.
-In your second body paragraph it seems like you talk about the arrangement/structure of the pieces. Talk about the three rhetorical appeals. Show how logical ideas flow, the credibility of the author and how their articles impact the audience.
-In your third body paragraph you mention emotional appeals and your last body paragraph talks about how things were stated. You talk about the style and combine the paragraphs.
-Your conclusion goes more into the arguments of the authors rather than their rhetorical strategies.
