Letter to a Friend…

by Great Works

— Afshara Choudhury

Dear Best Friend,

As you know I just transferred to Baruch and I am taking a course named English literature 2800. In the beginning when I registered for this class, I didn’t think I would like the reading material and the process of reading these gigantic plays or stories but after 4th weeks into this class i started liking the reading material. Each one of the reading materials has a message connected to the story to make a point and reference to our(human) life cycle. Talking about my reading experience in this class, the first play I read is Lysistrata and I felt this text is a great work in terms of english literature class because the play talks about unity and how it’s important for us to bring all types of people to create a difference in society. From this text I get to learn about women and how they are trying to make peace with other people by going on “sex strike against their husband in order to stop the Peloponnesian war.” In my opinion, I feel like this play is trying to prove a point that women have the ability and power if they want to improve and make social changes. The most important reason I found Lysistrata is a great work of literature because of how my professor taught me in this course. Even though it is a huge text, the way my professor discusses this play in the class that lead me to understand and analyze the depth meaning of this play. “ Most of the female characters in the play are obsessed with wine and sex,” this statement shows how this play also portray woman as weak with bad characteristics in them. From my perspective this play is relevant to today’s world where in some cases we are able to witness the strong characteristics of women where women are working with men in high positions in any industry but in some countries we are still seeing women are living their worst life because of social pressure. As you told me you are moving to NYC and transferring to Baruch so I will definitely recommend you to take this english literature course with my professor who will make this class fun and you will be able to enjoy your reading while learning new things about english literature world. Specially This play called “Lysistrata” will take you to a wide ride with lots of lessons and you can find this play as one of the relevant plays you will read in this course. Take Care and see you soon. Yours truly Afshara
