My Major: Computer Information Systems (BBA)
When I started to think about what I would like to study while in college, I decided on business. What really got me into the business field was my father. For 21 years, he owned a business in Manhattan where he managed a bagel shop on Lexington Avenue called Bagels & More. That store was basically my second home as my family and I was always there. Growing up, I would always walk around the store thinking I was helping my dad sell his goods. After years of playing with my toy register next to the actual one, my dad lost his store and was forced to find another job. He and his cousin worked hard to open up the store and actually built a business and after 21 years, but unfortunately, it was all taken away from them. Now as a construction worker, my dad always talks about how he loved owning a business and wishes he still had the store. From hearing this and always loving to go into the store and pretending it was my own, I decided to go into business.
Over the summer of 2019, I had an internship at Goldman Sach’s Girls who Code. As a result of this internship, I was able to experience both the business and technology field which got me interested in both of these industries. I really enjoyed my time at Goldman Sachs and learned a lot of new things as the summer went on. I also got to meet and network with many people who currently work there. During my time, I was able to gain knowledge in robotics, the workings of a business, finance, coding languages, and also got to experience the overall environment of a business. It was a short, two-month journey, but it was definitely one of the most impacting factors that got me into computer information systems which focus on the uses of technology when managing a business.
In the future, I hope to find a business company that I love to work with just as my dad loved his own. As I begin taking my major classes here at Bernard M. Baruch CUNY College through the Zicklin School of Business, I have become even more inclined to go into the business/tech field. So far, I have taken the beginner classes for business classes which consist of Business Fundamentals: The Contemporary Business Landscape, Business Law, Microeconomics, and Business Statistics. Getting an in-depth explanation of different aspects that makes a successful business is really interesting to me. Although these classes focus on the business side of my interests, I can still see how technology is implemented into the field. For example, both my business fundamental and business statistic class required the use of Microsoft excel/spreadsheet. My official major of Computer Information Systems focuses more on data analytics, cybersecurity, and computer networking, but these prerequisite classes allow me to experience the basic components needed to run a business that can develop and grow over time. Next semester I will be diving into more of the Computer Information Systems major classes such as Macroeconomics, Introduction to Information Systems and Technologies, and Introduction to Business Communication. I am excited to learn and experience more about what this major is about and be able to enter the field by the end of my college days after acquiring my Bachelor’s of Business Administration.
My Minor: Art (Photography)
Recently, I have decided to minor in art through the Weissman School of Arts and Sciences. As part of Baruch graduation requirements, all students must pursue a liberal arts minor. I must admit that originally, I planned on minoring in a subject correlated with dance like music since I have ample experience in that area. However, after really thinking about it, I wanted to get into a subject I didn’t know much about. I love dance and always have as I have been basically doing it since I could walk. I started with the Sanasani Cultural Organization back in 2015 and am still a part of it today. Although dance is a passion of mine, I know that I can’t be a dancer forever. With this, I chose to go into photography. I feel like this is something I can do on the sideline. Whenever I go out to an event, I’m usually the one that ends up with the camera, taking pictures of everyone. I also do photoshoots for babies/toddlers for birthdays and/or holidays. Due to this minimal experience, I feel as though I would enjoy pursuing a minor in photography and I would love to learn to do it professionally as a possible future endeavor.
