Medea’s State of Mind

Medea seems be a smart woman. Well, she appears to take the stand of a smart woman by her cleverness. Her intelligence has caused her to suffer. Reason being, she had let herself over think and at the end she lost it all. However, she was able to out smart the Corinth Chorus by letting them agree with Nurse. The Nurse did not speak highly of Jason. Medea also led Jason to believe that her actions and her words were harmless, but Jason being blinded by her apologies did not realized it was all apart of Medea’s sick plan to kill Creon’s daughter and her two children. Let’s not forget! How Medea cleverly charmed her escape with Aegeus. Medea loves to use her drugs and her spills to manipulate for her own selfish desires. Medea may not appear to “best” wife or woman, but she does play cards correctly when it comes to getting her way or revenge. I strongly believe Medea’s state of mind is not up to par. Her actions in killing her brother to escape from her family, killing her two children and Creon’s daughter to being sorrow to Jason’s heart, Medea has officially lost her mind. Meaning, her intelligence made her over think and over react. I do not stand by Medea and her actions and I do not stand by Jason for leaving Medea. I just believe that Medea was not truly thinking about her actions. She was just using her intelligence and her gods to get her way. However, on another hand, Medea’s actions towards Jason does’t remind you of how women unpredictable thinking can cause them to act irrational? Or maybe Jason was intimidated by Medea’s smartest? Or maybe Jason was amazed by Medea’s cleverness?

This image is a relief sculptured. Remembered from Art History. This image shows the children giving Creon’s daughter the gifts from Medea.

  1. Hey a.claxton, I really enjoyed the picture and the video you attached with your blog post. I noticed that you said Medea over acted and over thought due to her intelligence. Personally, I think she overacted; however, if you ask Medea if she thinks her actions were too much, she would most probably say no. Medea seems like the type of person does whatever they can do get what they want. With that being said, I think what she did was what she wanted. I also wanted to note that, everyone knew deep down how intelligent Medea was, they just didn’t really pay it much mind.

  2. Thank you, A. Claxton; I really enjoyed reading your post. Your post led me to think about Medea’s actions more deeply. As your overall idea, I also concur that Medea was over thinking and overreacting. The way Medea plotted her revenge on Jason was not right. I did not understand her when she planned to kill her own innocent children, Creon, and Creon’s daughter. In my opinion, no one in the world should involve murder in revenge. I definitely believe that Medea is absolutely intelligent because when she was planning the revenge on Jason, the plan was very specific and Creon also mentioned that she is a clever woman in the play. I think both her intelligence and jealousy made her stand on the wrong position.

  3. Hey Abby,

Thank you providing such beautiful photos and that fantastic video. I definitely agree with your statement of Medea. She knew exactly what she was doing when she had committed such heinous crimes towards her children, The King and his daughter. I believe she had took advantage of her power, as being a well known sorcerer, in which she not only used it to keep Jason as her mate but ironically that’s how she had lost him. At the same time, I can understand from Jason perspective, that although he had done her wrong, no mother should kill her children. I definitely agree with him. I also believe, because of her pride she had let it get the best of her.

  4. Hi Abby,

I really enjoyed reading your post and I strongly agree with your ideas. I also think that Medea’s actions show that she is mentally unstable. On one side, I believe that she is very smart and caring woman, on another side, I think she is very emotional and irrational. Going against her family shows that she cared about Jason, killing her children is an evidence that she is unstable. While it is true that Jason caused her a lot of emotional pain, killing her own children is way too extreme. Ultimately, Medea seems very intelligent and strong woman, however her fearless intelligence is crossing a lot of moral and social lines.

  5. Hey Abby ,
Everyone seems to think that she is pretty unstable , however Jason and the King say because of her instability she is a “witch”. Unlike the women of corinth which perceive her as a wise women gone mad by the cruelty of her beloved. I can’t really state a clear opinion on this , however her ability to question all this in correlation to women in her society obviously displays that she can’t be as mad , as we may perceive her to be. This even a couple times when Medea questions herself , and states thats she is unsure of the decision regarding her children , and goes on to say how devastated she is by her mad thoughts. Its clear through this that Medea is fighting her consciousness with hypnosis of her emotions.
