History of Tottenville

ar135544452956632Tottenville is a white, upper class neighborhood on the south Shore of Staten Island. The South Shore is furthest from the St. George Ferry terminal that lies on the North Shore. Tottenville is at the very tip end of the Island and remains largely un-diversified when it comes to cultural, racial, ethnic and wealth stratification. The neighborhood has communities of semi attached homes, but also million dollar mansions that are newly built. There are also many historic properties that create a confusing facade of what the neighborhood is really like. There are the older generations of people that moved here from Italy, giving Staten Island its reputation and nickname as “Staten Italy”, whose children have grown up and moved on to build and live in these fancy new houses with nice cars a spouse, and a few kids. Staten Island seems to be a kind of place where everyone wants to raise their kids. Where I live, in Annadale on the South Shore, every single one of my neighbors is a family, just like mine. Well, not entirely as they are mainly white. I’ve grown up accustomed to the feeling of being different from everyone else simply because I wasn’t Italian or Irish. However, that may all change in the coming years. Conversely, it might just get even worse. Why is that? That is because Staten Island is getting its very first Chipotle Mexican Grill.
