Jayme Vines Writers Journal Prompt Week 5:

  1. Think of a time you had to write or compose in a new genre like Dirk describes.
    • What was the genre or format?
    • How did you feel about the new genre before writing it?
    • What features, affordances, or constraints does the genre have?
    • How did you learn those features?

I created a memoir about a point in my life when I had a really bad cut on my elbow in my sophomore year of high school. I was emotional before writing this memoir because I knew it would be difficult to get my words out, but I also felt empowered because I knew I needed to write about it right away because it had such a bad affect on my life and was the source of several issues and obstacles. The features of a memoir are really making the story feel alive and important to the readers, making it entertaining, which means making the audience understand where you’re coming from and also feeling alive. Having some relevancy is also a feature because it makes you think and relate to the writer. Another important feature of a memoir are transformations,  because you want to make sure there’s a logical flow to the story. Something the reader doesn’t expect or see coming. These are things I’ve learned by watching a lot of movies and reading a lot of books. When I write a memoir, it has taught me to employ the same features and to go deeper in thought from my own perspectives and experiences.

Jayme Vines: Framework for Success in Post Secondary Writing

1)What I like about the document is that each part provides a brief explanation or additional facts about the types of writing abilities that are significant, as well as bullet pointed statements about what you should do or look for when writing, as well as some definitions. I’m curious if using these tools and gathering this information when doing college writing will have a substantial affect on me in the future, as I use it and am aware of it.

2)Yes, I agree that these habits and experiences are important because they can help us improve and broaden our thinking, as well as come up with fresh thoughts and responses when writing or reading a text or novel. It also allows us to be creative and think outside the box.

3)Yes, I was guided toward these habits during my entire academic career. When I read a passage or any other piece of text/writing, I tend to make text-to-text connections whenever something in the text reminds me of something I’ve read previously. This is something I do frequently. I also employ the openness technique, in which I listen to and reflect on my teachers and peers thoughts and reactions to their work.

4)I constantly put these mental habits into practice. It’s a wonderful tool, and I’ve seen that it helps you become wiser and more knowledgeable. When you engage yourself in writing, you become a better person.

5)I see these experiences manifesting in my education so far, more on a deeper level. My thinking will become more expansive and sophisticated.

Jayme Vines Writers Journal Prompt Sep. 5th-11th.

Write about what seems challenging in the Literacy Narrative assignment. What strategies can you employ to tackle these challenges? What questions remain or things are still unknown about this assignment?

What seems to to be challenging in the Literacy Narrative assignment is having an idea about literacy and already knowing the goal of it, but really going in depth and bringing more ideas and information about the main factor of literacy, in other words, seeking to obtain more facts about literacy and its meaning. Using my expertise and awareness of what I already know about literacy, as well as thinking broadly and beyond the box, are two ways I might utilize to tackle these challenges. Considering how literacy can affect us as well as those in the outside world. In addition, I can do some literacy research to learn more. Question: Will it affect me in any way if I do a narrated power point that goes a bit over 10 minutes?

Jayme Vines: Ramsdell’s Question of Story

Maxwell and Dickman believe that “a story is a fact, wrapped in an emotion that compels us to take an action that transforms our world.” How would you define the term story? What do you think are the most important elements of a good story? What examples help support your thoughts?

  • To begin, I’d want to state that I agree with Maxwell and Dickman’s definitions of a story. To add to their definition of the term, in my interpretation, a story is a collection of ideas and information delivered in a descriptive manner that includes incidents, events, and characters and is written or told to entertain in a variety of methods and styles. I think the most important elements of a good story are the setting of a story, the characters, the plot, the conflict and the resolution. These elements can keep the story moving along smoothly and allow the events to develop in a natural and understandable manner for the reader. Setting, for example, refers to the location and time of the story. The main characters, or important characters in the plot. The author’s message to the audience is referred to as the theme. The main problem in the story is conveyed through conflict. Man vs. nature (external), man vs. himself (internal), and man vs. man (external or internal) which all are three types of conflict . The climax is a significant event that changes the path of the story. Plot (which is what we summarize) and Resolution (which occurs after the Climax and is when you understand what happens to the characters after the problem is solved).

Jayme Vines “Welcome” Post

Hello,

1)My name is Jayme Vines and one thing about me is I have a twin sister.

2)One of my goals for this semester in this class is to enhance my language abilities when writing essays or short responses. When I’m offering details and discussing a piece of text, a quote, or other areas of writing, I want to be able to sound more specific and clear.

3)Question: How will college writing, differ from high school writing? Are there any differences?

4)A writing guideline I’ve been taught that whenever we write, whether it’s an essay or a brief response, we should always make a rough draft to help organize and put our thoughts and ideas together. Drafting is also beneficial because it allows you to plan, edit, and modify your work before moving on to the final. From middle school to high school, I learned this guideline from my teachers. This rule has an impact on my writing because it can help me improve my writing skills by allowing me to combine my ideas with evidence. This rule is one of the most useful things I’ve learned about writing. It has helped me tremendously 🙂

5)In my personal life, I attempt to write a lot of songs and poems. I write a variety of essays, annotate articles, take notes, and respond to short questions in my academic life.
