- Think of a time you had to write or compose in a new genre like Dirk describes.
- What was the genre or format?
- How did you feel about the new genre before writing it?
- What features, affordances, or constraints does the genre have?
- How did you learn those features?
I created a memoir about a point in my life when I had a really bad cut on my elbow in my sophomore year of high school. I was emotional before writing this memoir because I knew it would be difficult to get my words out, but I also felt empowered because I knew I needed to write about it right away because it had such a bad affect on my life and was the source of several issues and obstacles. The features of a memoir are really making the story feel alive and important to the readers, making it entertaining, which means making the audience understand where you’re coming from and also feeling alive. Having some relevancy is also a feature because it makes you think and relate to the writer. Another important feature of a memoir are transformations, because you want to make sure there’s a logical flow to the story. Something the reader doesn’t expect or see coming. These are things I’ve learned by watching a lot of movies and reading a lot of books. When I write a memoir, it has taught me to employ the same features and to go deeper in thought from my own perspectives and experiences.
