Group 6: Stanford Prison Experiment

Group 6: Hannah Sarraf

  1. A specific aspect of the experiment that I found interesting was the fact that the “guards” in the experiment have to wear sunglasses, for a specific reason, which is so that the prisoners can’t see the guards’ eyes; the guards are lose some humanity towards the prisoners, and are more harsh towards them. The sunglasses, I believe, are a big part of the reason that the guards were so harsh and treated the prisoners so inhumanely. The sunglasses gave the guards a sense of power, and the researchers wanted the guards to wear them to make the analogy of the prisoners and guards to what was happening in reality (protests during the 60’s and 70’s).
  2. A specific aspect of the experiment that I found interesting was the fact that the prisoners were brought down to the basement blindfolded, and stripped of their clothes. I strongly believe that this was simply not necessary part of the experiment. Though I understand it added to the sense of authoritarianism of the guards, I still believe it was just demeaning, and just uncalled for; surely there are other things that guards can do that give them that power.
