Midpoint Reflection, Zuzanna Osiecka

Although I consider myself a decent writer, I know that there is always room for me to grow and improve my writing skills. Writing a post every week, usually analyzing a certain concept, has definitely helped me develop a better organization of my ideas. I love analyzing various notions, and this class has definitely made me feel more comfortable expressing myself. However, when it comes to free writing, my mind usually draws a blank and I cannot seem to translate my thoughts into words. I always like to feel prepared and know that what I will say/write will transfer properly from my thoughts and be understood by everyone; therefore, I tend to doubt myself and hold back during discussion. Often, I find myself regretting it, and wishing that I had shared my view with others. It is definitely an area that I need to work on, but one that will definitely help me in other aspects in my future.

It’s really hard sometimes to push past your comfort zone and say something that you might think it’s wrong. I was having the same trouble in the beginning of class, however I started speaking out more. In my opinion, don’t doubt yourself because no one is wrong just because of their own opinion. It’s a class discussion so everyone, including yourself, gets to know about everyone’s thoughts and they might learn something from you.

The first time we had to free write I also felt completely out of my own element, like you I like to have some sort of structure when writing something down and not a vague idea or question. But over time it has gotten easier when I let my thoughts wonder back to all of the questions and comments that popped in my head while reading the texts required. Maybe remembering those things could help you with free writing so you won’t feel totally out of your element.

Zuzanna, I completely understand your hesitation when it comes to free-writing or to the class discussion. But you always have such great points and I think it would really add to the group dynamic if you (as well as more people in the class) opened us up to your thoughts about different topics. I would love to see how you develop with expressing yourself more in the classroom. I would suggest just letting go of most of the concerns you may have about how things will translate and simply saying how you feel. The more you do this, the easier it will become over time. Don’t hold back!
