Midpoint Reflections (Vyonna Etheleau)

English has always been a subject I’ve struggled with during my time in school due to writing. I’ve always been great at reading and analyzing texts but the flow of writing an essay is a battle for me that I know I need to overcome. Because of this class I am much more comfortable with free writing in class and I think its because some the texts chosen this semester tend to leave the readers with a lot of questions or thoughts to evaluate.  I also need to work on my spelling, grammar as well as my use of punctuation when writing. I’ve always considered group work to be annoying from past experiences of being left to do most of the work or being given the most challenging portion but during my time in Baruch, I’ve come to understand that group work is unavoidable and will also be that way with most jobs. Communicating with my group members has not been challenging which I am thankful for and helping each other isn’t difficult either.

I believe that I have improved greatly on many different aspects during this semester in English class. For starters, I have always struggled understanding and analyzing from a literal level and I believe with the help of my group and Professor I have become much better at analyzing texts and writing papers. Now whenever I read a text no matter what genre it is, I always start to analyze it which helps to bring a different perspective while doing many other readings. The most interesting aspect about this class that I really enjoy is the free writing part which is the most fun in my opinion. Free writing has always been a strong suite of mine and being allowed to free write has been great.

    Hi Vyonna,

I used to have grammar issues as well, but a trick I used is that after I complete my paper, I would just take a break from it. I would give it a few hours or even a day if I finished the paper beforehand. Once you look back, your mind is completely fresh. You can spot your mistakes easily. When we read our papers immediately, we don’t catch the mistakes because we know exactly what we were saying . Or you can even try reading your paper out loud. I agree I’m not a big fan of group projects either, but coming to baruch showed me the value of group work and skills you can learn.
    Hope this helps.

    Hi Vyonna,

Grammar also used to be an issue for me but as I started to read more and more, my grammar improved. I believe that if you read outside of class (NY Times, books, etc) your read comprehension and your grammar skills would definitely improve.

    Rest of Group:

I believe one thing we should work together on as a group is communication. I agree we have good communication but it could always become better which is something we should work towards because in our future jobs, we would need to be able to communicate very easily with other groups in order to accomplish our goals. In order to do this, I think we should plan out everything more accordingly.

I dont think my writing has improved much over the last few months but obviously there is always room for improvement in every facet of the classroom and life in general. I could probably read more often which would in turn make me a have a better vocabulary and a better writer overall. However, I think that this class has challenged my punctuality as a student as well as my academic discipline(i.e. handing in online assignments ON TIME). This class has also served as a great reminder of how much more technology is being implemented in the classroom, especially in a hybrid course. Obviously you have to stay on top of due dates and times or this class will eat away at your grade. This class is almost a window into the real world for me as far as being punctual goes. Once you are late, there is no going back. I look forward to trying to make myself a better and more responsible student.

    Kamron,
I agree with you. I think we could plan out our responses a little better and probably offer eachother more help with our assignments. I know its not our responsibility to stay on top of other students, but I think im going to start texting in our group chat every time we have an assigment or as soon as the due date starts to approach. I think it will be a good way for me to remind myself that we have work due as well as it will ensure that all of our group members are aware of the assignment.
