This article has a presence of both authority and authoritarianism, with authority having the larger presence. The presence of authority can be seen in the parts where Hanif writes about the Muslims who are tasked with having to defend Islam. Whether or not they take on this responsibility deliberately doesn’t matter because once they defend Islam they become authorities on the subject. They are responsible for the “story,” spinning it as they see fit in order to affect public perception. At the same time the article has a sense of authoritarianism which can be seen in the very fact that the religion must be defended. This gives a sense authoritarianism because it shows that those in power have instilled in us a sense of black and white morality. Which leads us to believing that people in the same religion must also hold the same values.
