Assignment 1

One argument that Russell makes is that man kind’s Social Cohesion, which is its willingness to worth together to survive and prosper, begun to develop among those with similar faith rather than those of similar race or living in similar countries. Russell also states that this Social Cohesion also became very strong militarily as shown by Islamic conquests and the Crusades and was even displayed in the sixteenth century with countries of similar faith united against those of different faith. I agree with this as throughout history those with similar faiths have always banded together to fight against those with different beliefs with the prime example being the Crusades. This way of thinking, however, is becoming less common in the modern day due to globalization as people are able to come together despite being of different faiths as many people do in the US.

“But identity’ of creed has gradually become a stronger and stronger force. Its military strength was first displayed by Islam in the conquests of the seventh and eighth centuries. It supplied the moving force in the crusades and in the wars of religion. In the sixteenth century theological loyalties very often outweighed those of nationality: English Catholics sided with Spain, French Huguenots with England.”(Russel 6)
