One of my male cousins once told me of a time in which he was victim of power play. “I was on my way to the outer part of the Meijer store to grab a cart, and there was a lady standing by the exit. She stopped me and asked me to hand her my drawstring backpack,” said Tani who lives in Ohio. The American Civil Liberties Union defined racial profiling as the discriminatory practice by law enforcement officials of targeting individuals for suspicion of crime based on the individual’s race, ethnicity, religion or national origin. Criminal profiling, generally, as practiced by police, is the reliance on a group of characteristics they believe to be associated with crime. In this case, criminal profiling was practiced by an employee at the store, who had more power than my cousin, the customer. Nevertheless, criminal profiling and racial profiling go hand-in-hand, and both stem from discrimination and mostly prejudice.

I think that racial profiling within our society is very unfair to the general population that live in our country, so I agree with you on that point. I don’t believe that the lady at the exit had any specific reason to search your cousin. It is unfortunate that we live in the kind of world in which this is the case for many people of differing skin color. People’s association of certain races with specific things takes away from the subject’s identity. It is not right for civilians to feel like they are at risk, when they have done no harm.
This post has a lot in common with mohamed’s. Racial profiling is a very serious issue that we have in US. It is unfair for the wrongfully accused individuals. I believe there are bad people in the world, but definitely there are more good ones. People discriminate because of the few bad people that are out there. In each example, I do not believe either of the accused people should have been bothered. Either if it may appear that they are in the wrong or just be targeted, it is definitely a topic that has to be looked out more seriously.
