Assignment 3

I witnessed a power play on my way to the Baruch Library to print out a sample final for math class.  This other guy was walking in through the turnstile and while he was getting his ID out to swipe he put his coffee on the security guard’s desk. Another Security guard walked up and berated the one student who was walking in asking to see what was in his cup etc. The only other two people on the base floor of the library were me and someone who walked in before me. The student tried to explain to the security guard that he was just setting down his coffee to get his ID to get into the library, but the security guard kept persisting. About a minute later, the security let the student through after explaining himself for no reason whatsoever. I thought it was a very odd situation seeing as I’ve never seen that happen to someone before.

This was an odd experience. I haven’t yet seen a security guard berate a student during my time here at Baruch College. It was probably because he was bringing coffee into the library and drinks are usually looked down upon in there although many students still sneak drinks into the library. I certainly have experienced this power play from the security guard and I would assume so do many others. Whenever I enter the lex 17 building, I sometimes forget to show them my ID card and walk on line for the elevator. They would walk to me and ask loudly for my ID as if to purposely shame us for forgetting. I never get mad or anything because I understand its part of the security in keeping others safe but it is sometimes unpleasant to be singled out.

Im honestly really bummed by the security guards in our school. I think I can relate to your story, I had a somewhat similar experience. Regardless, I think theres something seriously wrong with the code of conduct that some of the security guards operate by. I don’t believe in being yelled at and berated for committing nothing wrong. I also personally believe that the security guards don’t need to be so angry or seem like they’re such an imposing force, they aren’t marines, they’re just unarmed peace officers. I respect the guards at Baruch who are friendly people, they’re all completely awesome, and they definitely exist, but I have dealt with/seen way too much tomfoolery on their part.
