Assignment 6

“When the journey from means to end is not too long, the means themselves are enjoyed if the end is ardently desired” (Russell 41).
Russell uses this chapter to explain what differentiates man from animals. Animals act in a way that is necessary for their own survival, such as building a nest or a dam for their home. In contrast, Humans have traits that differ, and have a will to do certain tasks. Humans have the ability to foresee the consequences of certain tasks and can exhibit restraint on their impulses. Russell then goes on to explain what human characteristics help man to achieve the “ends” as mentioned in the above quote. There is pride in the work that man goes through, but that has diminished due to mass production of goods and unskilled jobs in factories. All humans no longer have the same goal or desires. One example Russell uses is the one in the factory. The workers and managers both have different end goals but they both still work in the same environment. Russell connects this chapter with others by describing the emotions felt by humans and also by how man has thought their way through situations in the past to now.
