Snickers’ Super Bowl Commercial

Lawrence –

The advertisement uses music in a comedic way to express that Willem Dafoe is uncomfortable or uneasy about standing over a grate with a dress on, Every time the fan turns on the music starts up and when something takes a turn for the worse, the music cuts off.  When the Snicker Bar is eaten, the music plays again but in its entirety. This tells the viewer that they won’t be complete or entirely satisfied until they’ve had a Snickers like Willem Dafoe to transform into Marilyn Monroe.

Joel-

The use of actors in the advertisement is the strongest aspect. The contrast between both actors used really showed the change that was made. Using Williem Dafoe as a before and Marilyn Monroe as an after accentuates a huge transition. It really tells shows us Twix’s message that “you are not you when you’re hungry”. The use of a famous actor such as Monroe makes the commercial memorable and iconic. Finally, the use of Eugene Levy adds comedy to the commercial. It is truly interesting how the use of actors can add so much to a visual advertisement.

Gunin-

This ad is effective because it recreates an iconic scene in Hollywood history. The scene referred in the advertisement is from The Seven Year Itch, where Marilyn Monroe was at the peak of her career in 1955. This scene is recreated today in many places such as memes, or satirical shows. When i saw the man in a white dress with wind blowing up, i immediately recognized the setting. This puts association in one’s mind so the commercial becomes relatable to the viewer. The line at the end is very ironic. He’s saying this scene won’t even make the cut, yet it goes on to be historic and then recreated in that commercial. I found that to be very effective for the ad.

Yes, this is a fun video. You all do a nice job pointing out various aspects: there is a nice before/after comment about the music; the use of celebrity actors; the background to the piece. Work to get even more specific, before our discussion on Wed., okay? In other words, the specific differences about seeing Dafoe in this iconic dress as opposed to (the iconic) MM, the placement of Snickers (not a huge part of this, interestingly), and, importantly, the specific demographic for these advertisers.
    Nicely done.
