Milgram Response

  1. Obedience is a necessary ingredient for society to function.

2.  This goes to show how far human beings would go to appease an authority figure.

I chose these two quotations together because I believe they go hand in hand.  Society does greatly rely on obedience to establish order or a preset way of doing things. Obedience controls how we interact with other people. And sometimes, we will do anything to make sure we obey what ever laws are set in place. It may be due to fear or some other external factor. Milgram used the Holocaust as an example of how people can commit such heinous crimes to appease the authority even though their actions were clearly destructive. Within this short documentary, I find that humans aren’t necessarily willing to hurt someone if they knew what they were doing, however, they will inflict greats amount of pain if its just a case of “following orders”.

I do agree with you that people will do some horrible things in the name of “following orders” and this experiment did prove this point. However, I don’t believe that this needed to be once again pointed out given the track record of the groups that exist within our country or the even considering the establishment of it. Milgram should have already had a good understanding of this. It would have been more appropriate to conduct interviews nationally than to put on blinders and act as if he didn’t carry the same personality trait to disregard another life for one ridiculous reason or another.

I strongly agree with you and Milgram’s opinion but also you have to put in prospective that without the characteristics of power were someone has to over empower someone as in terms of going to war and taking someone’s turf. The force of the human race wouldn’t move forward without these characters though we learn from our mistakes and correct them history will always repeat its self and always stay static as usual. It’s a form of disciplinary act and that’s what makes the world evolve without it the human race would remain static and we wouldn’t push ourselves to victory.
