On January 1, 1898, New Yorkers celebrated the consolidation of New York City. The Bronx, Brooklyn, Staten Island and Queens joined together under one centralized city government with a staggering population of 3.4 million. The time was now ripe for the improvement of municipal services, including education. City College’s 23rd street site had outgrown this downtown campus, and by the turn of the century plans were underway for a move uptown to St. Nicholas Heights. This new facility would now serve students from all five boroughs.
