Syria Article #2

Some Progress on Syria

Recently, there has been some progress in the attempt to subdue the violence going on in Syria. Five members who make up the United Nations Security Council have decided to the resolution which would rid Syria of its chemical weapons. This is “a useful, if imperfect, step toward a credible international response to a bloody war that has killed more than 100,000 Syrians.” This resolution would legally obligate Syria to give up and dis-ban its stock pile of weapons. If Syria fails to comply, the United Nations Security Council has the authority to penalize Syria in the way they best see fit. Hopefully, Syria will peacefully comply. If it fail’s to do this, I think it would be wise for the UNSC to devise a way to penalize Syria which does not involve any further violence. Personally, I think that  major nations should come together to tackle the true problems at hand and stop jockeying for power on a global scale. For example, Russia has repeatedly shielded President Bashar al-Assad of Syria from punishment. Also, they were to blame for the delay in the American response to this crisis. It would be wise to put petty problems away and truly focus on the issue at hand: the unlawful slaughtering of innocent civilians in Syria. There are still immense challenge ahead, but this resolution in a step in the right direction. Hopefully, this problem is resolved sooner rather than later to avoid any further bloodshed.
