About the Guide

In “Time, Work-Discipline, and Industrial Capitalism” E.P. Thompson draws upon a wide array of historical, literary, sociological, anthropological, and political works and theories that would have been common knowledge to many of his readers when he published the article in 1967. Many of these references, however, are not as commonly known among contemporary readers.

This site provides a short explanation of some references that Thompson makes in his article. It is not comprehensive, but should provide some background to help make sense of the references that Thompson is making and the evidence and examples that he is using to support this argument.

The site is organized according to the sections of the article.
