“I would prefer not to”
That is Bartleby’s catchphrase! So professional and respectful but yet rude! It’s perfect! His answer is not only nonchalant but strong-minded as well. It’s an interesting combination. Which makes the characters- Ginger Nut, Turkey, Nippers, and the Narrator-dumbfounded.
Bartleby is something else. I expected it to be about a quirky man who worked on Wall Street. I thought that because his name was weird to begin with…so I expected a unique name with a unique story.
Throughout the whole story, I began to realize that the narrator, who is nameless, began to become fascinated with Bartleby…this man who is careless of society’s rules, values, and morals. Bartleby’s whole life is a mystery which intrigued me to want to read more. This lead me to believe that Bartleby represented free-will which the Narrator has never had, since he has always followed what society told him to do. Bartleby represents what the Narrator didn’t have and I believe that when Bartleby died…that was when the Narrator found and understood what free-will is.
While I was looking for a video to watch I came upon this English project and I was really excited. I wanted to know how these kids portrayed the ending since it was vague ending… but it was perfect to me.
This video is great. Their video was just how I imagined it to be. I liked how they did the ending. It made the ending seem real to me in a way. I liked how they put the depressing music in the background to make the scene much more powerful, dark, and dramatic. I love school projects because they put a different, more fun perspective to a story in general over a professional blogger or teacher.
Overall, I love short stories. Therefore, I am not surprised that I liked this story.
