Song of Myself

The video I chose was “Song of Myself, by Walt Whitman (Analysis & Interpretation) by Nick Courtright, the Executive Editor of Atmosphere Press. He talks about the most popular section which is Section 6 about the grass. He talks about the Bible for dust to dust and compares it to the poem as grass to grass. He talks about how we cannot answer questions that only God can answer such as what is grass? Section 15 was very confusing to me because it was just a list of people but he explains to us viewers why he named different kinds of people. It was meant to mean that no matter who you are that we are all equal from top to bottom as humans. I was very interested when the narrator talks about the animal section and calls humans more materialistic and animals are not which I thought was very funny because of course animals cannot own material items.

My favorite section:

I am the poet of the Body and I am the poet of the Soul,
The pleasures of heaven are with me and the pains of hell are
with me,
The first I graft and increase upon myself, the latter I translate
into a new tongue.

I am the poet of the woman the same as the man,
And I say it is as great to be a woman as to be a man,
And I say there is nothing greater than the mother of men.

I chant the chant of dilation or pride,
We have had ducking and deprecating about enough,
I show that size is only development.

Have you outstript the rest? are you the President?
It is a trifle, they will more than arrive there every one, and still
pass on.

I am he that walks with the tender and growing night,
I call to the earth and sea half-held by the night.
This was my favorite section because I intercepted this as that we are all equal and he just empathizes it even more. It also reminds me of that if there are going to be highs there will also be lows. Because no matter what you do you will always get something else that comes with it. If you do something bad you will get the consequences and if you do something good you will feel the joy.
