Douglas Gordon – Play dead; Real time
I think this video purpose is to take something dark and cast a different view on it. Gordon purposely records the entire image in a single shot to show that up until one dies, life is continuous. He also chooses to to record on the ground and only have the elephant in half the frame while the other half of the frame is the white ground. I think his choice to film on the ground is to show that in all iterations of being “dead”, the physical body is on the ground. His other choice of to have the camera to continuous rotate in a circle, is to show the world/people don’t stop moving if one dies.
Pipilotti Rist – Ever is Over All
The artist uses to films and blends them without a border. I believe the purpose of this is to help give the video a calm setting. The artist chooses to film the women straight on and then the women’s side. This is done purposefully to capture the women’s face and emotions at the right moments. The overall message of the piece is to show an abstract view of a peaceful protest. The humming, the women’s smile as well as the flowers are all balanced and in sync to give it a peaceful vibe, although the women is using a flower to smash car windows.
