The Way Things Go by Fischli and Weiss showed a mechanism of how ordinary objects can be turned into something elaborate and be used in a different way. Our eyes move with the currently moving object and the camera helps focus our attention by either moving closer to or farther from the object like when the camera focused on the black bag rotating on a pole and as the rope untangles, the camera moves back to accommodate the movement and to transition to the next phase of the sequence. The artist used the camera to capture the movement in segments to emphasize that each part is necessary and has to finish before another part moves. The camera also moves to the right making it seem like we are moving with the objects as it goes.
Play Dead; Real Time by Douglas Gordon showed an elephant in a white box room with the camera rotating around the room. The video makes you feel sad for the elephant and curious at the same time. Sad in which the video evokes isolation and one part it showed the elephant’s face as it was playing dead making it seemed real. Curious on why the elephant would need to learn to play dead which makes you think of how they are killed in the wild by poachers for ivory. This video shows you how playful, gentle and simple this creature is. I believe that the artist wants to evoke a feeling of sadness and curiosity to show how beautiful an elephant is.
