Today, I visited the gallery. The whole gallery reminded me that I was in the movie “Saw” due to the emptiness of the space. The objects seemed to be carefully placed in order to enhance the nature of the surrounding area. The color scheme seemed rather bland, with neutrality and repetition of the color white. The art exhibit reminded me of the fact that simplicity still has the ability to portray messages through a more basic medium. The videos that were playing puts some sculptures into context. Especially the barbell and the barbell rack.
I found that a lot of the materials used reminded me a lot about the anatomy of the human body and I think the exhibition as a whole is supposed to demonstrate the workings of a moving body. He really captured the essence of the muscular athlete who has a dedication to his craft and love for pain. Mathew Barney put together the original show together 25 years ago and todays the mirror exhibition still has a raw and awe effect.
