Interview Giancarlo

Question 1.

There’s a particular moment where your sound helps shape the meaning of your work (describe this moment and what you think the meaning of the work is: waves).  If you agree, tell me how you came about to add this sound.  If you disagree, tell me how you think the sound at that moment is functioning?

I think the moment where the sound helped shape the meaning of my work was during the shot of the waves where you can hear each wave and the wind as you see the accumulation of debris on the shore. This shot shows that time has passed and how the waves carried the leaves to the shore.

Question 2.

When I watch your video, I can think of it in context to Pierre Huyghe (one of the videos that we have seen in class that are all on the Fuel for Thought section of blog) because of the scenic visuals and flow .  What were your inspirations (any inspirations) for making the work?

For this work I was inspired by water especially the river. I wanted it to be a metaphor of time for the river flows one way continuously like time and how vast it is. Each wave can be a second in time and there are many ways water can be used just like time.

Question 3.

I would describe the tempo of how you sequence clips (ie. the specific editing of your video clips in a specific order) as very smooth and natural to a degree .  How does your use of sound add or contrast to that?

Slow. I used somber types of sounds for both versions for the first to emphasize each sound of the water droplets/waves, and for the second to make it seem that you are in a journey with the anticipation of reaching the end shot.

Question 4.

I’m particularly interested in how you used the camera in the following way: the entry scene into the reservoir.  Can you tell me why you did this?

I wanted it to be like a reveal of the reservoir so I tilted the camera up as if we were going in the reservoir using the small patch of land that is open and panned the camera to the right to go with the flow of the water to show how the waves end on the shore with the scene ending on the leaves accumulated overtime.

Question 5.

Open Question.  Ask anything relevant to the video.  No technical questions (like how did you do this?)  Keep it to the meaning of the work.

Why did you choose this theme/topic?

To be honest my first idea was to show my journey to the river but that was too obvious so I went with a more abstract topic by focusing on making water a symbol/metaphor of time. With this theme, you really have to give it a thought since the meaning is not so obvious. One may think that it’s just water flowing but in a different way it is an essence of time with the plants growing overtime on the sides and rocks that are eroded by the water.
