Pipolotti Rist New Museum – Walter

Pipolotti Rist & My Barbarians Exhibition at New Museum

My expectations going into pixel forest by Rist was low. I usually do not enjoy exhibits because I am often left bored. Since my expectations were low and I didn’t expect much, I went in with an open mind. My experience was definitely a great one. There is something about the interaction with the art that makes an experience more pleasurable. I appreciated how the video was playing on a rock as it acts like a canvas. I found myself wanting to experience the whole video instead of snippets here and there. I also observed how individuals interacted with the space that was set up, and how the people almost became a part of the art. The scenery gave out a certain serenity. All you could hear was the sounds and music.

The videos that played side to side on both the second and third floors was very interesting. They all fit in and it flowed perfectly. I was lost in the visuals and it didn’t seem forced. While going to the third floor I wasn’t too crazy about the lights that were dropped from the ceiling. The sudden change of colors changed the atmosphere which was pleasant to stare at. The video that played in the back of that floor was also interesting but I wonder why it was put there in the first place? It felt like it didn’t need to be there.

Finally, the fourth floor and the beds were different. I wanted to stay for the whole video but time was wasting. Accomplishing the feat of having a substantial amount of people in a room where it is quiet and all are watching the art is really impressive. I find it also interesting that our projects aren’t allowed to incorporate music of any kind, but if this interactive art show had no music I would have found it very dull. The music really put the scene and transformed the space into a dreamlike atmosphere. I wanted to take pictures but didn’t in fear that I would miss something great.
