To briefly introduce myself, I am a Malaysian and I moved to the US in October 2014. It means that a lot of my influence came from Malaysia because I’ve lived there for 15 years. When I was a third grader, my English teacher, a young imposing woman who had the same last name as me and chubby pinky cheeks, asked our class to write an essay with a prompt “What you want to be in the future?” I wrote that I wanted to be a cashier, thinking that the barcode scanner is crazy cool and that, I can bring all the cash in the drawer home after work. When I was a fourth grader, she again asked us to write an essay with the same prompt to see if we changed our minds as we aged. I wrote I wanted to be an accountant, and it has since stayed the same throughout the years. My aunt influenced my choice even though she didn’t mean it. She is a typical businesswoman who is passionate about her work as a fishmonger. She always ties her hair into a bun and brings her little black bag that’s full of coins and cash to start her work-day. I used to sit next to her every-day wanting to help with preparing money for the next business day. Since Malaysia’s paper money have a different color for different values. I will say out loud while counting “Blue is RM1, Green is RM5, Red is RM10, Orange is RM20, and Purple is RM50”. It is always the favorite moment of the day because it is the only time I get to spend with my busy aunt and, of course, I enjoyed getting to count money. However, she always wanted to drive me away because I was so annoying asking thousands of questions about how to add and subtract that she could concentrate on what she was doing. One day, out of the blue, she said that I should be an accountant if I loved to count money. “Accountants can count up to a million dollars a day,” she said. Thus, I grew up with the belief that accountants only have to sit there and calculate money all day. I realized there has to be more to accounting because we now have an electronic cash register. At that age, however, I had absolutely no idea what an accountant does, but I thought that if I could just count money, then I wanted to be an accountant. So, studying accounting is something I want from a very young age and I don’t have to think hard to figure out. Apart from my aunt’s influence, I volunteered to work at my dad’s company accounting department in summer 2016. I wanted to satisfy my curiosity about what accountants do with personal experience. During that summer, it was absolutely mind-blowing for me to be able to touch base on different accounting software like Excel and Quick Book. It definitely boosts up my interest in studying accounting. Therefore, I wanted to pursue accounting as my future because it is my passion.
