World War I – Art and Excorcism (Otto Dix)

I think art can be a means for catharsis and Otto Dix exemplifies that through his paintings and etchings. His works show how you can transfer the gruesome nightmares of war from your mind and onto canvas as a way to cope. Anthony Swofford and Tim O’Brien do this in words, though one is non-fiction and one is fiction respectively, both serve as thoughtful reflections of experience. Junger’s memoir might not have been as fluid or entertaining as Swofford’s or O’Brien’s; it is a somewhat staccato and a truthful account that reads like a date-stamped journal, which makes it feel like Junger wrote to relieve his tensions. Owen’s words are likewise neither fiction nor non-fiction, just real, and raw in poetic language, and they express the feelings of war as an exorcism in sense not unlike Dix’s medium.

Well said. Art and writing are definitely a means for catharsis. Just as Dix purged his guilt and splattered it onto a canvas, O’Brien and Junger purged their guilt onto paper. But as therapeutic as this may be, it only relieves tensions; it doesn’t efface memories. Like an exorcism, but only half complete because half the inner demons remain. How sad, disturbing and torturous. You can see it in the work.
