Final Paper
by adam.sherman ~ November 30th, 2010. Filed under: Uncategorized. For my final paper, I am going to write about how sports and war are related. I will specifically focus on the Boston and New York and Boston Los Angelos sports rivarly dealing with the redsox and yankees plus the lakers and celtics. I chose this because I’m a boston fan and living in New York I get an unique perspective on how intense the rivarly can get, I get to see the rivalry behind enemy lines being in new york. The vast majority of people in new york root for the yankees and the lakers (at least in my experience). I will use DeLillo’s “the triumph of death”, “A tale of two cities: the 2004 yankees red sox rivalry” by Tony Massarotti and John Harper, and “When the game was Ours” by jackie macmullan.
Both of these rivarly’s has had an impact on my life from watching countless hours of the game on tv to going to yankee stadium with a red sox shirt. For alot of the fans, the game really has importance and sometimes hosility that one only finds in war. I’ve personally seen people get into fights over the game, even the players have. The lakers celtics rivarly had an east coast west coast battle that made it seem like two countries in war, plus in the 1980’s there was a racial factor which created even more hositility.

Sorry for the late response–I thought I was supposed to email it, instead of post it.
I am thoroughly intrigued by the topic you have chosen. I would be interested in seeing what you plan to write about how sports and war are related. When sports comes to mind, most people usually think about friendly competition, pride within their own teams, and whatnot. People rarely see how sports can turn malicious–even violent, at times. There are stories in the newspaper where the rivalry has gotten so hostile, that people are being harassed, threatened and even killed. I remember reading once in the newspaper about how a female Boston Red Sox fan was killed in a car accident, involving Yankee fans. Stories such as these are unbearably shocking, but remain a good example of how rivalry in sports can become so volatile. I am interested in seeing what else you will be writing in your paper about sports/war rivalry–perhaps dealing with more psychological similarities? How one’s mindset when absorbed in a game is similar to one in battle? Your literary resources sound informative, and I am curious to see what else you can come up with for this topic! It sounds like a topic that has many potential directions that it can go. Best of luck with your paper!
By the way, I am also a Boston Red Sox fan!

The only real a single I actually hate is when folks desire to learn your “secret” They by no means want to hear the “diet, training, and patience” response.
