Final Paper
by sdelgado ~ December 1st, 2010. Filed under: Uncategorized. For my final paper I will be writing about the psychological effects of war on journalists who go overseas to cover war. I will focus on the journalists who have been in the Iraq War. in my essay I will talk about the danger and safety of these journalists, their training and protection, and their coping with fear and danger while they are covering war and when they get back home.
I will be using the graphic novel Palestine by Joe Sacco to talk about some incidents in which Sacco found it necessary to either stay and “get the story” or be careful of his own life. I will also be using three other books and probably two other scholarly articles that give examples of journalists who had to make decisions of whether to remain in the war zone to get the stories and the effect it had on them after they covered it or not.

That is a very interesting topic considering how these journalists risk their lives for information, while being neutral about the war.
I have a few suggestions:
Are you going to be exploring their reasons for covering the war? I mean, some journalists do it for their search for information, such as Sacco, while others think it is a good career and financial move.
I think it would be a good idea to compare those that chose to remain in the war zone and those who decided to leave, and not just give examples. Comparing the two groups will help in better understanding the psychological affects that they had, and how they coped with them.
Since Sacco is your main source, another thing that you could do is to compare his incidents that you mentioned above of getting the story or valuing his life, to those of other journalists, to sort of get the feel of what goes on in their minds when they are stuck in a similar situation, and what leads them to take the decision that they take.
If I have any other suggestions, I’ll let you know, but this is quite a good topic.
