Syriana

So I watched Syriana last night…hm. I will start off by saying that I went into it with a negative attitude since I had never wanted to see it and then on top of it netflix gave it a 2.8 for me. As of now I rated it a 2 because to be honest I did not really enjoy it. I was extremely bored until the 55th minute, then I just gave up and allowed myself to be pulled into the movie. There are certain things that left me a bit puzzled. For example, I don’t understand why towards the end George Clooney’s character ended up randomly going to car that blew up…how did he know they were there? If he knew they were going to blow up that car, why walk up to it?
Also what did Matt Domon’s character’s son’s death have to do with the story line? Is it because the men wanted to avoid a law-suit so they gave his company the connection instead of another company? Clearly even though I watched the movie I still ended up with a lot of questions which hopefully will be answered in a class discussion. I will add though, that it was interesting how they portrayed the United States as an enemy at the end, a bit of a ballsy move if you ask me. The movie left off as if American’s just care about the way they are perceived and keeping their names out of negative light…It also showed Americans as willing to aid someone who wants to hold his country back for his own advantage as long as this alliance leads to increased profits…well that’s what I got out of watching Syriana…what did you get?

I totally agree with you, in that the movie was pretty boring. There seemed to be a lot going on behind the scenes with George Clooney’s character, but I had no clear idea of what.

Considering the movie takes place in the desert, I think the reason George Clooney is able to intercept the caravan is because I think that may have been the only road that went towards whatever convention center or airport or something? Thats all I can think of. I dont think he knew they were going to blow the car up, but I think he knew that the CIA had plans to kill the Prince somehow. He probably thought the assassination would be at their destination, not en route.

Also, I think what you said is exactly what the significance of the son’s death was. Without that, I dont think Matt Damon would have gotten that deal with the Prince. I think they offered it to him out of guilt.

I also agree that it was interesting to make the U.S. the villain. In some ways though, wouldn’t you say that they are both the protagonist as well as the antagonist? The CIA and the oil companies would be the antagonists, but Matt Damon’s character as well as George Clooney’s would be the protagonists. Damon was only trying to reach higher profits for the country, and did not seem aware of the plot with the oil companies. George Clooney tried to warn the prince against the attack on him, and infiltrate the CIA’s plans, although both protagonists failed.

Yea that’s an interesting point you made at the end Alison…The fact that both Protagonists failed…You usually have one of them win in the end of the movie but this time things were different. I would say the U.S. was portrayed just as the antagonist and therefore the villain won in this case both in America and in the Middle East
