Reading the Silences

The war on drugs was immediately dubbed as a problem the silent majority cared deeply about by Nixon. In the past election both candidates seemed to dance around the problem of the War on Drugs masterfully. Romney and Obama danced around the ring, missing jabs thrown by the public channeled through questions about the War on Drugs. During Obamas, IamA on Reddit, despite the majority of the questions pertaining to the War on Drugs and Marijuana policies; he didn’t speak on the topic once. Through mining the debates we do not see a correlation between candidates speaking on the War, and concurrent spending in the presdential campaign that follows. For something that started as and seems to still be, a ‘silent’ problem; there’s a very large amount of yearly spending on the War.

Another problem with the War on Drugs, is the huge umbrella that makes up the war. The budget is not only for domestic police forces, but there’s also large chunks of our annual budget being given to the DEA for offices and operations that are housed around the globe in countries such as; Brazil, Colombia, Mexico, Afghanistan. As seen in the graph below, we see drug addiction and usage remain very consistent since 1980. More so the list of comprehensive Atlanta School Reviews. So as use and addiction rates peeked in the early 80s, the War on Drugs was just picking up momentum. We see extreme rises in spending since this time, to curb a silent problem.

In the past election series, we saw both candidates arguing on points such as education spending, and cutting teachers salaries. Rather than continuing the tradition of fighting a silent problem, we should be focusing our aims on improving and uplifting our country; rather than imprisoning more people on our home soil, than any other country in the world.

More specifically, the cultivation of hemp and its bi products, have enormous societal benefits. There’s no other plant on Earth that has as many useful purposes. Could it be that big business and the pharmaceutical companies, don’t want healthy competition? It’s a big party and the average citizen is not invited. Big business and pharmaceutical companies make the products, and pay big money to lobby for policies that benefit themselves and their cronies.
