The following volume consists of a series of scholarly essays which aim to explore and critique Wen Fu – The Art of Writing from a variety of lenses; namely, a close reading and critical lens, a psychological lens and historical lens. You will find the lens essays listed in that respective order, as we intend to display a philological view of the text and then broaden to more topical literary criticisms. Each essay is synopsized by its author and is available by clicking the title link in each section.

Close Reading SCHOLARLY LENS

by Peter P.

I am analyzing Lu Chi’s Wen Fu through a critical lens primarily to see whether or not Lu Chi follows through with his own guidelines for great writing. Paying close attention to his diction, figurative language, form, structure, and use of literary devices will also help me understand why Lu Chi discusses strict rules for good writing while simultaneously praising the infinite capability of creativity. Approaching the source text in this way uncovers the deeper meaning of Lu Chi’s work and enhances the greater instructive concepts of the piece with smaller nuances.

New Criticism SCHOLARLY LENS

by Shanise B.

My goal in focusing on the text from a New Criticism Lens is to explore a metaphysical aspect of the text and discover how Lu Chi’s use of metaphor not only enhances the text itself, but might also help to shape our worldview by encouraging metaphorical thinking. You will find some close reading and abstract metaphor analysis of specific sections of the text.

Psychological Scholarly Lens

by Nino K.

I’ve looked at the text under a “Psychological Lens.” I’ve discussed the experiences that influenced the author to adopt his very own way to look at the process of writing. I think it’ll be interesting for the reader to hear about his difficulties in life that somehow opened up his mind to the completely different world where only imagination and psychological approach can make you see unseen things.

Historical Scholarly Lens

by Domingo R.

My approach towards the source text is through the “Historic Lens.” I will focus the scholarly essay on comparing the Wen Fu (The Art of Writing) in contrast to Lu Chi’s life, what was happening during the time he wrote his Wen Fu and its effect on his text, the political mood and the social environment that propelled him to write, the cultural and intellectual climate of the time, his purpose or intention for writing and what historical legacy he was hoping to accomplish after writing the Wen Fu.
