Al-Qaeda –

A Pakistan-based terrorist organization and group founded by Osama Bin Laden which was formally established in 1988. Their main mission throughout the years has been to “kill US citizens-civilian or military-and their allies everywhere”. In 2001, the group carried out a brutal set of attacks on New York City’s World Trade center, known as the 9/11 attacks, by flying two planes into the twin towers and destroying a segment of the Pentagon.  Al-Qaeda is still active today, despite the killing of leader Bin Laden.

Oculus-

A brand new transportation hub located at Ground Zero, which was opened in June of 2015. Shaped like a bird, or an archaic fish, the spiky white structure withholds a PATH mezzanine for service to New Jersey, and a large subway station for service around New York. As a whole, the building cost $3.9 billion dollars to construct.

Memorial Pools-

Existing as the two largest manmade waterfalls in North America, the memorial pools are built from the twin towers’ original foundations. Each pool is around one acre in size, and is decorated with the engraved name of every person who was lost in the attacks. They were designed and created by Michael Arad and Peter Walker, and architect and landscape architect, respectively. The pair won a design competition specifically for the memorial, beating more than 5,200 separate entries. The flowing water is said to represent purity, resilience, and serenity.
